| Build a Bible Reading Habit | | Reading the Bible daily, every other day, or weekly can provide a reservoir of strength and be a stabilizing force in the midst of life. Wonder where to start? Here are some tips for building a Bible reading habit.
• Find a Bible version that you like to read or that your religious tradition supports. Talk to others in your congregation or the staff at your local bookstore if you have questions.
• Select a type of Bible that you will look forward to reading. You may want a study Bible with notes and maps for clarity, or a travel Bible that you can easily carry with you. Some people prefer a large-print Bible for easier viewing.
• Using a reading plan may help. It frees you from deciding where to begin each time you read and ensures a broad selection of texts. Many religious traditions use reading plans for worship, devotion, or study. One of the simplest reading plans is to read your way through the Psalms. They are individually numbered, usually short, and very understandable. You may want to divide longer psalms over several reading sessions.
• Choose a regular time for your reading. For example, set a specific hour of the day or a certain day of the week. You will begin to anticipate reading at that day or time.
• Set a length of time that you will read, especially if you are not using a reading plan that has already broken the text into manageable sections.
• Read in the same place each time, at least while you are getting started (during your commute, at the kitchen table, on the couch, in bed, or whatever works for you).
• Find a partner who shares your interest to check in with about your reading. It helps to be accountable to someone else when life is hectic. | |
